Recording Vocals at Home

Record vocals at home. Get professional results. It is about technique, not gear.

The room matters. A closet full of clothes is a great vocal booth. The clothes absorb reflections.

Position the singer six to twelve inches from the mic. Use a pop filter. Angle the mic slightly off axis to reduce sibilance.

Record at -6 dB peaks. Leave headroom for the mix. Hot recordings distort.

Do multiple takes. Not one perfect take. Comp the best parts from five takes into one great vocal.

Warm up first. A cold vocal sounds different than a warmed one.

Here is the truth. A great performance on a cheap mic beats a bad performance on an expensive one.
